Valentines Day

Valentines Day originates from early Christian martyrs. A high court of love was established in Paris on February 14th 1400. The court handled issues like betrayal, love contracts, and violence against woman, the judges had been selected by there poetry reading skills. Other then Christmas, Valentines Day is the other holiday of the year that more children are conceived, as well as a high percentage with violence against women. Starting in the 19th century Valentines Day became a major money maker for the economy. More then one billion cards alone are sent out world wide on this historic day, not to mention candy and flowers.  Consumers purchase on average an estimated 180 million roses for Valentine’s Day with 74 percent of rose purchases for Valentine’s Day being made by men. Valentine’s Day is the number one floral market holiday, obtaining 45% of holiday transactions and 32% of dollar mass.  Jewellery stores sell 3.5 Billion worth of merchandise every year. More than 45 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is the forth most money making holiday of the year for confectionery purchases. This Love day has become more of a profit maker for the economy, then for love, it spreads world wide  and has a lot of different dates on the calendar.  China for example it is called The Night of Sevens, and in Korea it is labeled White day, taking place a month after Valentines Day. For the US and Canada this day has become a large help to small businesses and Corporations. The average man spends $140.00 and the average female spends $70.00.

For many, Valentine’s Day is about booking the perfect resaurant , ordering the perfect  flowers and purchusing  that perfect Valentine gift. While for others , the holiday of  love prances by.
Valentine’s Day has often been classified as just an self-justification for consumerism, a time for profit and to goudge the consumer. Further more , the well-meaning tradition of sending Valentine cards has also been stapled by faultfinders everywhere, as if it is the econmys fault  that people are only sending cards unthoughfully, without idea at all . Indeed, Valentine’s Day is the second largest card-exchanging holiday next to Christmas. But to what point?…Just like Christmas  the majority go in depth for gifts.  How many know what this day is really about?  Did you know that it originates from the ancient Roman fertility festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on 15th of February in honor of the gods Leprous and Faunas, as well as the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Ramous. During the festival, young men would draw the names of women from a box, and each couple would be brought together until next year’s Festival. More often then not, they would  marry. In 391AD, Emperor Theodosius declared Christianity as the official religion of  Rome. The fertility festival was celebrated until 496AD when Pope Gelasius replaced it with a similar Festival. For patron saint of the Festival he chose the lover saint, St Valentine. He also changed the date of the celebration from the 15th of February to the date of St Valentine’s death, 14th of February.  Valentines Day has become to be remembered more as the festival of love. In 1969 it was dropped from the Roman Catholic calendar as a day of feast.
