Saudi judge refuses to annul marriage of girl, 8 on her Mother’s request

This is just shocking! A father of an 8 year old agrees to give away his daughter to a 47 years old man to settle some debts in Saudi Arabia! The father agreed to marry off his 8 year old daughter for an advance dowry of £5000. This just sickens me to my stomach.

The judge in this case, Sheikh Habib Abdallah al-Habib, dismissed a petition brought by the girl’s mother because the Mother is not the legal guardian of the girl in question. 8 year old girl’s parents are separated so only way she can get out of this is if she files for divorce when she reaches puberty. Do you see the trouble in that? However, the judge asked for a pledge from the 47 year old bride not to consummate the marriage until the girl reaches puberty according to the Mother’s lawyer Abdullah al-Jutaili.

Another obvious thing apparent on the internet that some people think this is to do with the fact that it is a norm in Islam. I did some research which indicates otherwise. This is simply wrong and prohibited both ethically and religiously. This not only is happening in Islam but in Christianity, in Hindu religion, in Buddhism. No one is denying that this kind of act of child abuse is not acceptable but still some thinks its just Islam. It happened in the United States as well where religious cult leaders would get themselves involved into marriages or having sex with miners. Is that a fault of the religion or your beliefs or its someone’s personal, sick, perverted mind? I would go with the later one.

The father of the girl in this case insists that he protected his daughter by making a handshake deal with the man not to consummate the marriage until she is 18. This kind of incidents are not new in Saudi Arabia though. A Saudi Arabia researcher for Human rights, Mr. Christoph Wilcke said his organization has heard many other cases of child marriages because Saudi public is now able to express this kind of anger, especially so when girls are traded off to older men.
Not to say anything bad but a quick search on the internet shows some backgrounds which may have influenced the judge to make his decision. According to

*Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64:*

“Narrated ‘Aisha: that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).”

I am not qualified to say much about so powerful things but these are some facts you can find on the internet or on any explanatory books. Another thing that bothers me is WHAT kind of government Saudi’s have? Why can’t some governmental overlooking be done in this case?

A poor man that has someothing somebody wants would face the wrath of men with the force of Gods will being told through men as the weapon while a wealthy man will hide behind up holding traditions of his faith in a God but for the same act.

Religion is religion. Islam may be in the strict category, but who are we to judge it? There are open minded countries and there are close minded countries. Saudi Arabia just being one of the close minded ones.

Personally, I get disgusted with the fact that young girls get married at such a young age, even before they reach puberty.

Although according to historic facts, it was ok to marry girls off to older men in islamic history
( the world has advanced, and so have the minds of muslims. If Muslim men hadn’t advanced anywhere, they wouldn’t be letting their wives and daughters out of the house. Saudi Arabia’s Islamic Police may be quite strict, but this is what keeps the country conservative, and religious.

The girl’s family is in charge of what happens to her. It is not child abuse if she is married off at a young age. As long as the deal is made that the marriage will not be consummated until the girl is 18, the girl is in no real danger. The only problem will be if the girl does not have any sort of contact with her family after she is married off. If the family believes it is alright to marry her off, so be it. If the girl can contact her family during the marriage and especially during her young age, then there truly isn’t a huge problem in it.

I personally would never let my daughter get married at such a young age, and especially to an older man. What I have stated above is just defending Saudi Arabia as a fellow member of the Arab League.

I am not going to go on with the rules of Islam, but Saudi Arabia is simply just following the rules of Islam. You can’t tell them to change.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I just think it is not Islam to blame. It is the people who can not interpret the religion properly. However, I will not count out western culture either. When a woman in western culture wears mini-skirt and bra outside, they are considered style. When a girl in middle east wear hijab or Vail it is considered women suppression. When a western man have extra marital affair it is not considered as bad as when a Muslim marries multiple times according to his religion where it clearly says, do not marry multiple times if you can not provide or show respect to everyone equally. I dont know if it is fundamentalism on westerner’s part or on the part of Muslims. However way you see it its not right.

I do condemn the acts of blaming the girl when she gets rape and the rapist walk free in Islamic countries but that is just extreme and that is not something that Islam teaches.

I have done some research since my first article and all my views are according to my findings.

This is in response to blogger and Nour. I’m Muslim, but I have a brain of my own to think with and without using your so-called research, I’m quite capable of realizing Saudi Arabia and its laws are messed up. What might have been alright back in the prophets days are just not so now, so please do not simplify things that are considered rape, brutality, violation of human rights and just cruel and unjust behaviour. Bottom line is that there is NO excuse for it.

I get that you wouldn’t sell off your children too and since that’s your point of view do the world a favor and don’t understand, make sense or even attempt to sit in those people’s shoes. It’s like saying genocide is alright because God only saved Noah and his family and killed off the rest of the world. THAT IS NOT ALRIGHT you people with not-so-bright backsides 🙂
