Ohio Man Richard Cooey Says He Weighs Too Much To Be Executed

An inmate in Ohio who was convicted of raping and murdering two women says that he can not be executed by lethal injection. His reasons why? Executioners would have a hard time finding his veins because he’s too fat. Also, his weight may diminish the effectiveness of one of the drugs used in the lethal injection cocktail.

Richard Cooey is 5’7 and weighs 267 pounds. He had poor veins to begin with when he was first sentenced to execution fiver years before. However, his time in prison has only worsened the problem and now there is a lawsuit against his execution. Prison officials have allegedly had trouble drawing blood from Cooey for regular medical procedures.

The 41 year old prisoner is supposed to be put to death for raping and murdering two your women in 1986. The execution is scheduled for October 14th. Cooey is given drugs for migraine headaches, Topamax that can create some type of resistance to Thiopental which is a drug that is used to help put inmates to sleep before they are administered the lethal injections.

Cooey’s weight and the drugs he has been prescribed may make it impossible for him to be properly anesthetized. If he is not put under by the first drug experts say that putting him under will be extremely painful. Another inmate who faced execution last year was also overweight. Christopher Newton was six feet and he weighed 265 pounds. Officials had trouble finding his veins. Another killer Jeffrey Lundgren was put to death, in spite of claims that he may feel terrible pain from execution because he was overweight and diabetic.

I am not a cruel person but I’ve got to tell you, the fact that these people may feel terrible pain when they are executed does not really phase me. I do not want them to feel pain but if they do, well, that is the way it is. Not to mention, these guys that are overweight in prison and getting better health care for their ailments than some people that get up and go to work every day and follow the laws of the land is kind of disturbing. Some guy gets medication for his migraines? I know people that suffer through those blinding headaches because they can’t afford to go to the doctor. Yet this guy on death row has access to such a medication? Very interesting to say the least.

At the end of the day, if you are a murderer and you are sentenced to die, then you must be executed. Even if it causes you some pain, the act must be carried out. I am sure that these two young women that this guy raped and murdered experienced great pain. Not to mention, the pain of their loved ones is never ending. Do we really need to worry about this guy being hurt? I think not. I say, set up the I.V.’s and get the show on the road. I am very compassionate but I know that there are some things that just must be done.

You obviously do not have a relative on death row waiting to be executed. Inmates do not have access to good food, it’s the kind of slop that would only be given to feed pigs, medical care is basic and inmates have to wait many months before they are treated. Any medical treatment from within the correctional institution has to be paid for by the inmate, if he does not have family to provide the funds needed, they go without. Everything an inmate needs has to be paid for, even down to the most basic items such as toilet paper. Inmates become obese because of a high fat diet and no exercise, not because they are being well cared for.

Interesting comment Tracy. You are right I dont have any relatives on death row and hope I never do. I will see if I can find some articles to be published that portrays the right picture of an inmate. Thanks again for your comment.

When you committ a crime, you have to pay your debt to society. If they want adequate diets and medical care, then don’t do anything to get in prison. This man took 2 lives, he deserves any pain and suffering he gets. What about the victims, he didn’t consider whether they were being treaterd fairly.
