Life and Love – The Brandon Crisp Story

Recently in Barrie, Ontario, a young boy of 15 years old went missing. His name was Brandon Crisp. He went missing on Thanksgiving after getting in a fight with his parents over video gaming. He rode off on his bike. He was playing the popular game Call of Duty 4. It was all over the news. This really touched me as I have a son who is 16. He also is a big video gamer. I do not know how many arguments we have had centered on his gaming habits. The problem is that once they get into these games nothing else matters. It is not unusual for my son to play games most of the day. Of course, his father and I tell him to get out and do something, but it rarely works.

What I could not understand is why the parents just let him leave. It has thought that Brandon had other emotional problems that he may have been dealing with that led to his disappearance. The search started after there was no word from the boy and no one knew where he was. The search went on for weeks with a reward from Microsoft and tips coming in on his whereabouts. Even the television show America’s Most Wanted got involved and posted a piece about Brandon. They found a small area where they felt Brandon had stopped. They found a jacket, chips and crackers. They also found his mountain bike. Of course, at that point some hope returned of finding the missing teen. Unfortunately, that hope would be dashed.

Hunters in a wooded area not far from his home found his body. It is thought he fell from a tree and sustained chest injuries that killed him. I know that when I heard the news I was upset. This young man died far too young. He had his whole life in front of him. This tragedy like many others should have had a different outcome. I am sure many people are touched by his death especially those with children. Here is the families’ statement:
We are so very proud to have parented such a wonderful, caring and beautiful son who has touched so many hearts. We take great comfort in our time of grief, knowing that his story has and will continue to have a profound impact on parents and children alike, that more time will be made by families to share precious time together. Life and love should never be taken for granted.

This statement is very true especially now with technology moving ever forward. Who knows what the next invention will be that will rob our children of their lives and time with their family. I think we all need to be vigilante and make sure we talk to our kids and keep the lines of communication open. If there is a problem then we should know about it. It is very hard being a teenager these days. They may think they do not need us but they do. We need to love them above all else and hopefully, something like this horrible death of one of our children never happens again.
