Jose Luis Garza a Obese Man Dies After Plea For Help

A Mexican man who weighed 990 pounds died after begging for help on television. Jose Luis Garza made a plea for help with his weight problem before he had to be rushed to the hospital where he died of heart failure. The 47 year old man had apparently struggled with depression and weight issues throughout his life. The depression began after his parents died of natural cause within two weeks of one another. During the four month preceding his death Jose was bedridden.

Over the weekend Jose started to have trouble breathing. His friends and family are upset over the fact that state official did not do anything for him. Of course state officials said that there was little that they could have done for Jose. He had to be loading into a friend’s truck in order to take him to the hospital. State officials say that the care he would have received at the hospital would have been the same as what he received at home.

The question of who should take care of the morbidly obese is one that is being asked over and over again. As populations around the world become more obese there is a rising concern over who will take care of those that can not take care of themselves. Is it the responsibility of the state to take care of people who have become obese? What exactly can be done for someone in this predicament?

Once a person has reached close to a 1,000 pounds movement is very limited. Even if health officials had tried to come in and help Jose it would have been a major struggle just to get him out of the house. A regular ambulance would not have been effective and getting a person out of a house once they get to that size is nearly impossible. Although it is understandable that Jose Luis Garza’s loved ones are upset that no one helped him, it seem that they too could have helped him at some point before he reached 990 pounds.

Jose made a plea on national television for help. What type of help did he want? Yes, it would be great if there were plenty of obesity doctors ready to step in and help but the truth is, there just isn’t that kind of health care available. Obesity is something that we can control and at the end of the day, it is hard to justify funds for a condition that can be treated with prevention.

The other side of the coin is that the general public is not that enlightened about health. There are ways to keep yourself from becoming obese providing that you do not have a health condition that can cause obesity. The best way to fight this epidemic is to educate and empower people to understand nutrition and the best way to take care of themselves. At the end of the day, must be responsible for ourselves and each other. Knowing how to keep from becoming obese is the only way to fight the epidemic.

I understand what you are saying about this being a condition that can be prevented. However, like with any other condition that can be prevented such as lung cancer from a chain smoker, aids from someone who insisted on having unprotected sex, or even a drug addict or alcoholic, when they finally come to that point where they give that cry for help, there are professionals who step in to help. Of course this could have been prevented and the family could have stepped in sooner. But to say “what type of help did he want?” is kind of unfair. He probably wanted the advice and human compassion that is offered to the cancer, aids or addiction patient.
