My experience with eToro Forex Trading Platform

Last edited on October 05, 2012. Added new information and new experience with eToro.

Recent payment proof from eToro (October 05, 2012):

This is my very recent payment from eToro. I haven’t traded much last month so it was not that much, but the reason I am showing it to you is because eToro is not a scam and they are legit. They have been paying me since I started trading without any issues.

eToro Payment Proof

~~~ Oriniginal post with new updates about eToro ~~~
Hello everyone, as promised here is the recent updates from eToro. This contains my very recent (October ) experience with my experience with eToro’s Help desk, my experience with my account manager at eToro and my payment withdrawal experience.
My experience with eToro Help desk:
Every time I had to contact help desk last few days it was about frustration and some inquiries. I have noticed there are some users who keep saying eToro is a Scam. While I didn’t want to believe that but I had to find out for myself and wanted to share my experience. So I confronted the person at the help desk asking, “Why people think you are a scam?” They basically said they have over 2 million users and of course as with any businesses they have competitions as well. Some people lose money and they blame you for their mistakes. Well, that totally makes sense. Keeping aside all the facts I have found that that is true when eToro is growing and other platforms are not as fast, of course some competitions and some unhappy customers will be saying bad things about it.
Next I had another experience with eToro is I was speaking to this person who was on help desk few days ago and I confronted her about software issues they were having. While we were in the middle of the conversation, I got booted. While I didn’t lose any money for those sessions but I was very mad. I thought they booted me out intentionally. However within 2 minutes I received a call from the Help Desk and she was very helpful. I think that is excellent customer service.
I have the records of all the chats as small screen shots. If anyone is interested let me know I will send it to you or if I get some time I will optimize them for the net.
Now of course these do not address the issues about their software upgrades and people losing money. So I was told by the help desk person to send an email to the account manager. I did so. A screen shot of my email to my account manager is below and that brings me to the next update section.
Email to eToro Account Manager
Experience with my account manager: So after I sent the email above which was on October 7, I received a reply very next day. He basically explained all the issues they will be addressing on the next version of the tool. So here is his reply email screenshot:
So again, I maybe easily pleased or easily sold, but my experience with this is very good so far even when everyone was complaining how bad they were.
My experience with money withdrawal from eToro: Last few days I got by around 50 users from eToro I think about money withdrawal and whether it was ok or if they would disable my account if I request money or not. So here is the process as I promised I will put on the web for everyone to see.
First of all from my account on eToro I requested withdrawal of $100, and on Friday (October 3) I contacted helpdesk asking what should be the process to withdraw money. They told me to send them the following documents as first time withdrawal:
  1. Copy of utility bill
  2. Copy of my passport (where the picture is)
  3. Copy of the money withdrawal request form.
Because I was being lazy, on late Saturday (October 4) I finally sent all my documents via email. I did not require the credit card because I requested money via PayPal.
Then on October 5, I received a confirmation email from accounting department of eToro with reference number for my withdrawal request. They indicated it will be up to 5 business days to process. I was waiting for it and on Tuesday October 7 I received my payment via PayPal. Here is the screen shot of that.
So here you go everyone. That’s your proof. If you ask me, I would actually recommend eToro. I am *still* happy with their platform and customer services I get.
Its up to you whether you want to trade with someone or not. It is also your responsibility to take when you gain money or lose money. I have noticed some members get upset when they lose money and bash at other members. That’s something I have moral issue with. If you lose money take the responsibility. If you win money take the responsibility. If you win after taking someone’s advise you are not giving commission to him. So why would you be upset when you lose money after taking advise?
I am not a professional trader. I have lost bunch of money and probably will lose it all again but I take all the responsibilities of it. You should learn as much as you can about trading risks. I don’t give any advise. But I share my opinion about any pairs. If you gain money its for you to keep. If you lose I am not responsible for that as well. So happy trading and thanks for reading my post.
Update from 2012 (April):
I have been trading on forex for over 6 years now. I thought I would share some of the resources I have used to make stead profits in Forex. I am using them to help me develop my own strategy and then use that on eToro.
Cautionary Note: Please use this information at your own risk. Forex trading is not for everyone. Before you invest please learn as much as you can and learn of the risk.
    This tool sucks. it seems very easy at first. You deposit money then after first few trades you might get some money as profit but in the long run you will lose money. it is worse than a gambling site. Do your homework before throwing your money at it. There are many other tools for forex trading. Do your homework and stay away from eToro.
    eToro is not the best tool. I lost a lot of money. Their tool is very cleverly designed to make you lose money. Spread is also very high compared to other dealers. Be careful!
    eToro is a very well decorated scam. Seriously think about it for a minute. If you think it was that easy and it will make you rich, why do you think more people are not joining? You will hear almost everyday some are loosing money from it. So if you really want to waste your money donate to somewhere else. Very easy to lose money.
    I think you are an agent for eToro blogger. There are tons of people who ran into many issues with eToro but you seem to be the only one with *good experience.* When I first started with eToro my practice account was PERFECT. NOT A SINGLE TRADE was lost. I profited on demo account on all my trades. Then I thought I learned whats there to learn about currency trading. Then I started with 200 bucks and with high leverage but as you can guess i gained 25 bucks and after that I have lost it all. I thought it was my mistake. Then I went and deposited more money and lost it all again. Then I deposited more and lost it again. Basically since I started with real account I have profited only from 2 trades. EVERYTHING else, I have lost money. Now tell me why that might be? If they were not artificially encouraging me to deposit real money i don’t know what else there could be. I haven’t lost any money on DEMO account but I lost it all in the real account – sounds totally fishy to me. Dont waste your money with eToro.
    First of all their bonus programs sucks. Most of the time it doesnt work. Second of all there are some other legit and very well reputated companies out there that will pay you at least 200% of your investment. Doesn’t matter when you put in your money. You just have to negotiate with them. Look around the net and you will find lots of information on that. First little while eToro gave me good returns but after that everything went wrong. I used the same strategy on different platforms that i used on eToro and all at the same time. I lost money on eToro like running water, but at the same time with the other platform i was gaining money. I did not do anything different. If i was selling EUR/CHF on eToro I was selling it on the other plat form as well. I would lose it all on eToro where I would profit on the other platform. It’s totally a gamble and not well designed. It sucks and simply there is no way to complain or take action against them even though you know they are ripping you off. Thats why their head office in Cyprus. I would wait for them to open some offices in the US.
    So I was referred to eToro by a friend. Sure enough like everyone else i Started to gain profit which is like luring a kid with candy into a van and then driving away. I managed to make some money with first 4 or 5 trades. I then thought to myself ok this gotta be too good to be true. Long behold! I was right. I started to read and one of the tips from one of the blogs was that employ your strategy on different platforms. So I did. And guess what! The real picture of eToro came to life. I was gaining reasonable profits from multiple other platform such as FXCM micro or FinoTec or MetaTrader. Of course I used all demo accounts to try my strategies. And walaa … I started to lose money on eToro but all other plat forms was keeping me on the profit side. I used the SAME strategy same trade same currency pairs. But still I lost with eToro while I was gaining on other platforms. Another thing too, they have way too much spreads. Their excuse is that its up to the broker. That is the lamest excuse! Millions of dollars are being traded and they can’t make a better deal? If you invest $1000 on GBP/USD your spread can be anywhere from $100 to $500, how is that not signals a red light?
    Anyways, beware guys. Try your strategies with different platforms while you are doing business with eToro and you will see what i mean.
    Not sure about your experience but they are a gambling site. There system is set up in such a way so onlything that will happen is everyone lose money. Do your trading with someone else. eToro really sucks. Why else would they not accept US clients? Come on!
    I came across this post through another post. Man where do I start? I had nothing but troubles with eToro. They will rip you off. It is VERY easy to lose money. If you don’t like gambling I will say stay away from eToro. One of the warning bell is that they dont have any branches in the U.S. They are not abide by any rules. You can not check their official existence. Be scared!
    I tried the eToro demo site. The application is very user friendly, particularly for a newbie. But I realised the feed in the demo application is simulated or old and not real feed. It is too easy to make money in demo version (otherwise how can anyone make money within an hour of buying GBPUSD at 1.9527). I thought of depositing £50 (or $50) through paypal but on a second thought refrained from doing so unless I can practice on live data. Has anyone been successful in withdrawing money from eToro through Paypal?
    I was able to get $100 out. Posted my review on my blog about that. However, be careful with ever you do. My experiences has been very negative with eToro so far. If you have any concerns just ask away. I have had luck with different platforms, actually after seeing how much I have lost with eToro one of the companies gave me absolutely free money to try their tool. I am convinced and hooked into it. I am using same strategies I have used with eToro but having much better luck. So shop around everyone. If you are lucky you may find better solutions.
    Geesh!!!….It a no wonder people lose $$$ in fx!!! c’mon people, fx is no easy job! the platform is easy but you still need to learn both technical and fundamental analysis!! gosh man!..well, i use Metatrader to identify opportunity and use etoro just for the platform cos i think its fun…..anyway if you have complains with etoro then i recommend you open up with fxcm….platform are not for beginners but its totally pro and standard..
  15. admin | Feb 17, 2009 | Reply
    Thanks for your comment malmsteen. You are absolutely right, forex is not for everyone. People who think they will get rich overnight by trading forex or using eToro platform – they are mistaken. I agree of using metatrader to identify opportunities but i am not sure about using eToro for trading. I used eToro for about a year. I used the same strategy on eToro and on metatrader just to try it out to see what happens. Interestingly enough, I have lost with eToro on the same trade, at the same time at the same rates on the same pair but with metatrader i was profiting. Just a caparison. I am not currently with eToro – but hope they are honest and not just another gambling site. Does anyone know why they don’t have a branch office in the United States?
    Etoro is a dastardly SCAM.They are fleecing hundreds if not thousands of people out of their hard earned money!!!!! They are not regulated by anybody that is why they are based in Cyprus.
    Why do you think they require copies of your passport,utility bill and BOTH sides of your credit card.
    Most of the people in the chatroom are in on the SCAM and if they are not in the chatroom they are creating ANTISCAM like Forex Peoples Army!!!!!!! Very clever criminals indeed…….
    I endorsed all the comments about eToro because I lost my first $50 within half an hour. After losing that $50 again I stimulated myself to deposit another $50.Whole day I traded in Forex Trend but most of the day was in a negative direction never return to a positive direction. while in a practice trade, its movement was very frequent, I think they created the software such a way to suck your money without…?
    I am currently using metatrader. eToro was a bust for me. having great luck with metatrader. But remember it will not make you rich overnight. take a long term perspective. Also as always, do not invest what you can’t lose. It will be very hard on you emotionally if you lose it all because of greed or not doing research properly.
    Stay away form eToro. First flag should be that they are in cyprus. no local office in the US or Canada so basically they can do whatever they want. As many commenters on the blog I have had ran 2 trades at the same time, one one eToro and another on different trading platform. While I lost it all on eToro, I gained on the other platform on the same trade. BIG RED FLAG. Also they have a promotion where they ask you to write good things about them to get $25. Now, why would you need to do that if your platform is so good? It is your hard earned money so be careful with it. They are scammers.
    Pools —scam
    “Agreements, often written, among a group of traders to delegate authority to a single manager to trade in a specific stock for a specific period of time and then to share in the resulting profits or losses…
    I think they run a double set of books…
    Basically they attack vulnerable orders… to push the value down making you think you lost but in reality etoro still hold’s all the cash…
    I have seen the odd spike with etoro but i think they know how to push the market down 200 points or up…
    Wash trade —scam
    “Selling and repurchasing the same or substantially the same security for the purpose of generating activity and increasing the price”
    Basicly you could in theary buy 25 lot of 10,000 on etoro but sell 100,000 on another …your return would be 225…
    it would make it harder for them to run thier scams…
  26. tradergirl | Aug 15, 2009 | Reply
    I agree with zorro. You are absolutely right. they do have double set of books. In my experience, just like all other people on here, I won in almost all trades in demo account but it is a whole new story on real account. They also control the pip movement. based on your order, they will take it up or down. That is why you see that sometimes all of a sudden on your order all of a sudden it goes up 50 pips or so and then levels up to where it was. It’s just a scam to make you lose money. I am glad lot and lot more people are coming forward with the scam.
    They also don’t have any local responsibilities in the US or Canada so they basically can do whatever they want. Beaware of etoro. I have been using metatrader and haven’t seen more than 10 pips drops or ups in most of my trades when there is no news. But it is always a bad thing when you are trading on eToro platform.
    I also think the software you use is based on your profile. It is customized to make you lose money. That is why me and my friend who tried it out with me, we execute the same trade. He was selling and I was buying but on the same trade, technically one would gain – right? But no, both of us lost money on the same trade at the same time. Then when i contacted them they never replied our emails. tried to talk on helpdesk chat – they blocked us!
    SCAM Alert!
  41. Disillusioned | Jan 7, 2010 | Reply
    Hang on. I just want to get this all straightened out and make sure that I understand the basic fundamentals of this whole Forex thing properly…
    When the price of a currency goes up it is a direct result of people buying the currency. When the price goes down the opposite is true: lots of people have sold the currency. Is there anything else that would directly determine whether a price goes up or down?
    If not, unlike any other business, market, industry or whatever, competition in Forex is actually a GOOD thing as it means that the more people do the same thing the more of those people make money. Correct?
    In fact this means that cooperation in Forex would be even more powerful as it would make the Forex market predictable, controllable and beneficial for all involved (especially if people use various indicators, systems and signals that all point to the same conclusions). If this is the case, why is everyone working against each other?
    Unfortunately, this is not how it seems to work at all. Personally, I have already used two different indicators and neither one was adequately accurate. This was actually expected but worse than that was the fact that they often gave conflicting results for the same currencies and time periods! This should be impossible. Worst of all it actually serves to make the market as a whole even more volatile and unpredictable.
    With this in mind it’s no wonder that 95% of traders lose money. However, in order to make money you need to take your emotions out of the equation and trade solely on knowledge, wisdom and business logic… like some sort of machine. Or robot.
    However, robots out there don’t work as I’ve already said… but how exactly is that possible? How can it be that with all of the different proven techniques which a successful trader uses without any emotion when he or she recognizes a pattern cannot be emulated with a piece of programmed software?
    Or how about the source? Surely a successful trader executing trades on behalf of others as well as himself, or one who has passed on their techniques strengthens their own position as, boiling it down to the most basic of levels, more people agree with the trader meaning more money is going in the same direction meaning more people make money.
  42. admin | Jan 7, 2010 | Reply
    Thank you Disillusioned for your input. I am sure it will help some of the readers. I totally agree with you about taking out emotions but yet many don’t do that.
    If you have any tips on any platforms please share it with everyone or if you have any technicques you would like to share that would be great too.
    Basically what we have here is a case of trolls sent here from eToro’s competitors. You check any review site about any software/trading platform, and they are swarming with negative reviews from their competitors. They either post the negative stuff themselves, or they outsource the postings. Nothing more here. I’ve been using Etoro for quite some time and there is NO difference between the practice and real accounts.
    Successful trading is about sustaining profitability over a period of time and not about gaining or loosing individual trades. Basically, you can earn significant returns if you allow yourself to see the larger picture. However, traders often make terrible mistakes while trading. This takes place when a trader is unsuccessful with a trade they were certain would be a winner. As a result a trader has negative feelings of failure and plan revenge against their broker. Traders must accept the risk of each trade before they enter their position. By removing emotional ties to your trades you will only then see repeatable results and realize that your broker may have nothing to do with your misfortunes.
    Most of you should start with a good look at yourself.Start out by being proactive. The one reason several traders all over are losing money every day is because they are more reactive as opposed to being proactive. Do you know what this means? Reactive people tend to point the finger and blame on others when they have problems or other issues. Those that are successful know what actions they are supposed to take, and know what decisions they should make.
    Being proactive is essential because once you start accepting all the responsibility for your own actions, you are closing the door with all the excuses and you are opening the door that holds opportunities and learning. Instead of blaming others when there are problems, you face them head on and deal with them and look at all possible solutions.
    Happy trading!
    You’re calling it a scam because you lost 500 in a day. Well if you have the leverage maxed that can easily happen. They don’t control the price movements I have 2 platforms open at the same time it’s pretty easy to check. I trying to look for legitimate reviews but these morons make this whole page lose credibility. I’ve traded for a week ya the platform is not as good, the leverage is better than US based CO’s if you need it. Good luck to all with your 50$ deposits elsewhere, cause with that little your just gambling.
    i lost $2,000 with etoro. when compared the trade using a chart from fxcm, i found out that oil wae not down as much as they said it was. they made it worth less by playing with the digits so i can hit the stop loss sooner and boom.
    I recently opened an account with etoro and the next day this guy calls me asking me to deposit about $2000usd and etoro will add $2000usd for me to start trading. With what I have read on this site I have good reason to believe that things are not really good with etoro. Thanks for sharing
    You can browse the whole world wide web, you will never find a single broker with no negative review. The problem is that most newbies, think Forex trading is a quick money making scheme. They sign up with a broker with limited trading knowledge, NO money management skills, has limited knowledge of using leverage. Then they burn they accounts then blame the broker. The fact is most broker have their tricks to trip profitable traders (STO LOSS hunting is teh most common trick). Newbies DON’T know that, my advise… learn, learn, practise,practise and practise some more. Then start small…
    I have traded 3 different trading platforms. While the tools in Etoro may not be as diverse , nevertheless , it is reliable and real, unlike the negative comments that people make here. Yeah, you may have lost big bucks, but if you use a 1:400 leverage and purchase big without studying the trends of the market, keeping yourself up to date with the capital movements and developments of the world, and if you do not strategically use the stop loss and take profit in an intelligent and safe way, you are bound to lose in any forex platform. Trading forex is not a form of gamble. Get to know this trade well, while you can get a lot of money from it , the risks are inherently high. It is not a get rich quick scheme, trading forex requires skill and practise. And yes, I am an independant trader. do not accuse me of being an agent for them as some of the people here would every time someone says something positive about Etoro, I am happy with Etoro after trying out a couple of other platforms. Be very fair when you make comments about a trading platform, if you did not equip yourself with proper training and skills, I am afraid, all trading platforms are scams for u. I do know of people who bitch about all trading platforms that they have ventured into.
    Etoro sucks and should be stuck off, beware of the regulation, not regulated by the FSA. They also disabled my account it sucks, they also took money from my credit card which is fraud but they just denie everything.
    I have reported these guys but they seem to getting away and as for their CEO Jonathan Assi
    has published great article on fraud, scan and how wonderful Etoro platform is, the preacher should preach himself and not to steal by scamming. Beware this company is run very badly and connected people, trust me.
    Not sure what you guys are complaining about. I have been trading with eToro since 2010 and really have no complains. I am from Canada and did not see any issues with any of the trades I have executed. Since 2010 I have executed over 1100 trades. I lost money many times but it was not because of the eToro platform, but it was because of my own stupidity and greed.
    Doesn’t matter what platform you use, a disciplined trader always stick with his/her own execution plan. If you can’t you will lose money. Dont get greedy … that is the bottom line. eToro will not make you rich over night but you can make decent living from it. I am the living proof. I also have proofs of money transfers – if anyone interested – just let me know and I can show you the result.
    eToro is great for any investors.
    I’ve just started trading using eToro. I would like to know what the process is in terms of classifying what is taxable etc. How exactly do the ‘legalities’ fall into place? What is tax inclusive, exclusive, short term rate at the moment, which forms do we need to send in come tax season?
    Etoro is not a scam in the sense of directly stealing your money but it isn’t what it say it is either. The site lags terribly & crashes which equals you losing money. It has a trader copy system that is so faulty I hardly know where to begin. To put it simply, the copy system does not copy. There multi-level hedging channels on the site, one of which had over a thousand copiers at the start of March. Over 300 of these were wiped out within 48 hrs due to the non-copy system. These traders all lost at least US$100 with many losing much more. Tens of thousands of dollars in losses due to a system that Etoro guaranteed everyone was 100% reliable & what do we get? Denials, ostracism & promises of an improved system in future that will do nothing to help those who lost their money in good faith. The thing that amazed me most about the site was the way such huge problems were simply painted over as it continued on in its constant quest for more investors. Out of the hundreds I lost, not a single cent was returned by Etoro despite the fact it is 100% responsible. Now I am trying to get some of my salvageable funds back, which is a whole new story. A week of waiting so far with no avail. I am far from confident that I will be able to withdraw from this site. So far, it isn’t looking good.
